Still Winter Happenings

We apologize it has been so long since an update. Believe it or not both Grant and I have both started posts and gotten distracted by the sunshine and forgot to finish them. We feel like we need to take advantage of every sunny day and go outside because they seemed to be so limited. What we didn't know was that all but maybe 3 days of the past month would be beautiful and sunny. Since the snow has returned today, we'll do a quick round-up of the happenings of the Alaskan season known as Still Winter.

Mid-March we were lucky enough to have our good friends Ashley and Steven come for a visit. Due to snowstorms in both Colorado and Alaska the day they were set to arrive, our plans didn't proceed quite as planned. We were planning on meeting them at the Resurrection Pass Trailhead halfway between Homer and Anchorage for a cross-country ski trip into a cabin. Due to a bit of a late start from the delay in Colorado and the fresh foot of snow covering all signs of ski markings, we could not find the cabin. Rather than risk a cold night in the Alaskan wilderness, we turned around, found a motel in Soldotna, and spent the next day skiing around the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

Round 2, happily skiing on the pond
Unfortunately the 3 days of bad weather I mentioned above occurred right when Ashley and Steven were here. Like 12-foot white-capped waves in the bay with snow and freezing temperatures bad weather. Despite mother nature not cooperating, we had a lovely time with them and we hope they will come back to experience Homer on days like these ones:

A little after-work exercise on the Sunset Loop by our house
We are clearly trying to make all of you in Colorado who have had snowstorm after snowstorm jealous. To make you all feel better, there is still a solid 3 feet of snow at our house. With a couple of 50 degrees creeping into the forecast this week, we're hopeful to see some bare ground at our house soon. (And we hope spring comes quickly to those in Colorado as well!)
