Fishing!

While we were in Anchorage for Fur Rondy, we picked up a gun safe and hauled it down to Homer for one of my work colleagues and her husband. In return, her husband took us out on his boat yesterday for some fishing. I'd say we won that deal! The Winter King Salmon from the bay are prized for their high fat content and juiciness and according to most Alaskans, the best fish you can get. However, they are quite difficult to catch and there hasn't been a ton caught this year so far.  Fortunately, the combination of fishing with a long-time researcher for Fish and Game and maybe a hint of beginners luck worked for a very successful day.

The 15-pounder I hauled in

Grant's was a little smaller but he got 2 Rockfish
and a Pacific Cod as well

Calm day on the bay

Scenery isn't too bad either

When we cut into the fish, we discovered that the one Grant caught was a white-fleshed King. These are a bit more rare than regular Kings and favored by some. After thawing out from trolling around all day, we did a taste test of the white vs. red-fleshed King. The verdict: the white might have a hint more flavor than the red, however, they're both hands-down the best tasting fish we (former) landlubbers had ever had!
